Briggs & Stratton Standby Generators

The brand we recommend most

Our preferred generator brand

West Michigan Generator is a Briggs & Stratton dealer, and Briggs is the brand we recommend most. After years of installing and servicing standby generators across the lakeshore, we have come to trust the reliability and build quality of the Briggs & Stratton home standby line, and we stand behind every unit we set.

Why we recommend Briggs & Stratton

Briggs & Stratton has built engines for well over a century, and that experience shows in their standby generators. We choose them for their dependable starts, solid construction, and straightforward service, the things that matter when a generator has to run for days during a Michigan winter storm.

The Briggs & Stratton PowerProtect line

Most homes on the lakeshore are a good fit for the air-cooled PowerProtect series. We size the unit to the loads you want covered, from essential circuits to whole-home backup:

  • 13kW - a compact unit with roughly a 39% smaller footprint than other leading generators, powered by a commercial-grade Vanguard engine. A strong fit for essential circuits and smaller homes.
  • 18kW - built with NGMax technology, which draws more power from natural gas than competing units, so you get more coverage from the same fuel line.
  • 22kW - the same NGMax technology in a larger unit for whole-home backup, and the model Briggs backs with the longest standard warranty in its class.

For larger homes, lakeshore properties, and light-commercial buildings, we also install the liquid-cooled Fortress and DX systems, from 20kW up to 48kW. Every unit runs on natural gas or propane with an automatic transfer switch, so it starts on its own and switches back when the utility returns.

Features we like

  • Vanguard commercial-grade engine - the same engine family trusted in demanding commercial equipment.
  • NGMax technology - more usable power on natural gas on the models that have it.
  • Remote monitoring - check your generator's status from your computer, tablet, or phone, and we can keep an eye on it too.
  • Quiet operation and a compact footprint - a clean, neighbor-friendly install.

Not all six-year warranties are created equal

One of the biggest reasons we recommend Briggs & Stratton is the warranty. Several brands advertise a six-year warranty, but the coverage underneath is very different. Briggs covers both parts and labor for all six years at no start-up cost, while other brands start charging you for labor, and even some parts, well before year six.

Six-year generator warranty comparison: Briggs and Stratton covers parts and labor for all six years at no start-up cost, while Generac and Kohler charge for labor and some parts in later years

Over the life of the warranty, that difference adds up to real money. A Briggs unit typically costs far less in out-of-pocket repairs than a comparable Generac or Kohler, and that long-term value is exactly what we want for our customers.
